QUALITY OF YOUNGSTERS SOCIAL BONDING AND INVOLVEMENT IN RISKY BEHAVIOR

Abstract

Both in current and earlier theories of crime and risky behaviour, the quality of close relationships is considered to be one of the key risk and protective factors. In accordance with these theories (mainly Hirschi, Bowlby etc.) are as the key family factors mentioned basic emotional ties, namely the quality of attachment and acceptation by parents. Another crucial relationship in the early age of children and youth is that with friends and peers. The aim of the research was to find out how the quality of relationships within the family environment and the quality of peers relationships influences risk and delinquent behaviour in children and adolescents. The hypotheses were tested on the sample of 2407 pupils aged 11 to 19 years from two big cities in Slovakia. The ISRD questionnaire was used to gain the data related to variables. The collected data were descriptively analysed and tested by Spearman’s correlation. The findings suggest verification of hypotheses about the connection of quality of emotional ties with parents and the frequency of occurrence of risk and delinquent behaviour. As far as relationships with peers and fiends are concerned, teens are emotionally bound to friends, and they really care about their minds. The risk of attachment in relationships with friends may come into play when it comes to friends who have experience in delinquent activities and if emotional bonds within the family not satisfy the need of teens for trust and safety.
