Abstract

The article deals with the economic driving forces that provide students with possibilities to choose an optimal educational path. In our research we combine the theory of human economic behavior and the methodology of increasing efficiency of the human capital. We develop an econometric model of optimization for higher education and individual choice-making of educational paths. The proposed model is tested with the support of a specially established software on the basis of the real statistic data for more than 5.5 thousand students. To analyze the importance of rational economic expectations in the choice of educational paths, the students preferences are compared to the best economically possible educational paths. The results show that the choice of educational paths is implemented in accordance with economic incentives. According to the test sample, it happens that 66% of applicants make their choice in relation to economic preferences. The most important factor, which provide formation of optimal educational paths, is connected with higher wages after graduation (22% of all educational paths). Another factor deals with the possibility of educational costs reduction or the possibility of the educational budget support (12% of all educational paths). The main outcome of this research dealing with formation of optimal educational paths should be realized in accounting of students' expectations in construction of the governmental policy of investment in human capital.
