THE EXPRESSIVITY OF NON-VERBAL LANGUAGE. PRACTICAL STUDIES
Abstract
Silence means concentration, emotion, analysis. The spectator understands what he sees. In the moment in which he sees a sign, he decodes it; the sign can be represented by a gesture or a sound but by silence as well. Could silence be a sign of the inner conflict on both sides of the stage? The present research is based on three axes: the actor's play, the communication with the partner and the reception of the message considering the unuttered word the expression of the inner language. In this vein, methodologically speaking, I elaborated, along with my students, practical exercises which demonstrate the ability of the actor to communicate in the absence of words and of the receptor to acquire skills throughout the accumulated experience able to transform images into sensations. Approaching exercises based on silence coaches knowledge means and development of inner resources during the stage creation process of the character. Silence in the stage creation transmits sensations leaving the door open towards the imagination of the spectator. Silence is part of the convention, the spectator accepts the convention, and silence becomes performance. The unuttered message within the dramatic space recovers the elliptical scenes of the show. The expressivity of the gesture creates a form of empathy at the level of the communication between partners, resulting an artistic creation process with a silent content.
