SOCIAL BEHAVIOURS AND RITUAL PRACTICES IN THE CONTEXT OF RELIGIOUS PILGRIMAGE: MOTIVATIONS, SIGNIFICATIONS AND HISTORICAL LANDMARKS
Abstract
The practice of religious tourism is a complex phenomenon that aims visiting the religious buildings, as well as promoting the cultural and spiritual values. Social behaviours, ritual practices, motivations, destinations and manifestations of the pilgrimage have become more diversified throughout history, depending on the requirements and on the specificities of socio-cultural realities. The analysis of the pilgrimage phenomenon can be addressed both quantitatively and qualitatively (the analysis of pilgrims religious conceptions, the way in which the pilgrims are relates to the made pilgrimage, the discovery and the encounter with the sacred, the miraculous effects that they expect by achieving this pilgrimage). The religious tourism has profound spiritual implications and requires from tourists a high degree of education and culture, which allow the appreciation of cultural-religious objectives in terms of architecture, construction, value, spiritual significance and content of art objects.
