PERCEPTION OF PARENTAL ATTITUDES IN ADULT CHILDREN OF ALCOHOLICS (ACA)
Abstract
The ACA (Adult Children of Alcoholics) syndrome is a group of relatively well-established patterns of inadequate response in social situations which arose during the trauma of childhood in a family of alcoholics. As a result of painful experiences taken from home an adult child of an alcoholic is experiencing disturbances in cognitive and emotional processes of both the surrounding reality and himself. The cognitive and emotional distortions concern also the perception of parental attitudes. The idea of the ACA syndrome arose in the therapeutic practice of the Anonymous Alcoholics' Movement, although it has never been recognized as a clinical unit according to ICD-10, nor does such a unit exist in subsequent DSM classifications. The Adult Children of Alcoholics try to erase from memory the harm and fear they experienced in childhood. They want to get free from constant shame they feel. The difficulty lies in the fact that they cannot forget their unhappy childhood. The therapy is aimed at rearranging their memories to bring emotional recovery.
