PATHWAYS TOWARDS THE RENAISSANCE OF THE BUILT ENVIRONMENT: LINKS BETWEEN THE APPRECIATION OF GREEN SPACES IN THE DECAMERON AND DURING THE COVID-19 PANDEMIC
Abstract
Recent research on the use and health benefits of urban green spaces and their role in people’s coping strategies during Covid-19 has been reviewed, in order to be contrasted with the frame story of The Decameron. The landscapes and gardens of escape from the physical and moral impacts of the plague in Boccaccio’s frame story correspond to the role of urban and periurban green spaces in the uncertainty and threats of the current pandemic. The coping strategies in both of the examined cases are similar in that green spaces play an integral part in maintaining and recovering physical and mental health. It is essential for urban resilience that there is interconnectedness between people, people and nature, and among green spaces.
