DEALING WITH DOMESTIC VIOLENCE VICTIMS AND OFFENDERS IN POLAND

Abstract

The problems of crimes against families, which include domestic violence, have been present in society for many years. Nevertheless, with all changes in functioning of society and progress in the systems used to prevent violence and help both victims and offenders, it is worth analysing this topic further. On the one hand, the social awareness of the problem of violence and methods to react if it is observed are improving. On the other hand, violence is perceived as a problem concerning only women: it is often heard that women are victims rather than men are offenders. Little is known about offenders, and the stigma of shame is usually attached to women rather than to offenders. Similar situation is observed for the support, oriented mainly towards the victims, which is obviously right. However, if the actions are not taken to work with the offenders and they are limited only to punishment, warning and prevention, the opportunities for limitation the scale of this phenomenon will be missed. Therefore, the aim of this study is to characterize the phenomenon of family violence in Poland. The particular focus is on the description of victim and offender profiles, and types of most frequent violence-related offences. Furthermore, the legal regulations and support available for victims and offenders should also be analysed. It is also worth noting the problem connected with broadly understood violence prevention in families.
