CONTRASTIVE ANALYSIS OF NOUNS WITH THE METAPHORICAL MEANING OF QUANTITY IN THE ASPECT OF THEIR CONNOTATION IN ENGLISH AND RUSSIAN
Abstract
The lexical-semantic group of nouns with the metaphorical meaning of quantity in English and Russian is characterized in the article from the viewpoint of connotational markedness. The study uses the method of dictionary definitions, the method of continuous sampling, the method of componential analysis, the method of contrastive analysis, the descriptive method. Relying on the analysis the author identifies that the studied group is heterogeneous: some lexemes are neutral, and others are connotationally marked. The conducted analysis of the connotationally marked nouns testifies that the investigated group refers to the category of colloquial vocabulary, but in Russian it is more connotational and is lowered in the functional aspect. Being interesting linguistic material nouns with the metaphorical meaning of quantity could not but attracted linguists. The research continues the tradition of study of this group of words in national linguistics. Scientific relevance of research consists in identifying the current state of the lexical-semantic group of nouns with the metaphorical meaning of quantity in English and Russian.
