THE HOLOCAUST AND THE TRIALS OF WAR CRIMINALS IN THE USSR
Abstract
The topic of the Holocaust was under an unofficial ban in the USSR. It was not even mentioned in the encyclopedia "The Great Patriotic War of 1941-1945", which was published in 1985 when Perestroika started. To denote all victims of the Nazi occupation policy in the USSR, the term "peaceful Soviet citizens" was used, without specifying nationalities. Valuable information on the destruction of the Jewish population in the Nazi-occupied territory of Russia can be obtained by studying the documents of war criminal cases. The trials of war criminals began in the USSR during World War II, since 1942. They were held in practically all the major cities. But not all of those trials were open for ordinary citizens and journalists. Many trials have been classified, so the information about them has become available to researchers only recently. When gathering evidence, the investigators detected the time and conditions for the commission of the crime, the number of victims, and the names of the executioners. All this is very important for a comprehensive study of the Holocaust during World War II.
