Abstract

Locative constructions describe various aspects of event’s positioning in the three-dimensional space according to the concrete place of its accomplishment, in particular Earth. This type of location is usually considered to be weekly connected with the characteristics of the event in question. However, this specification is highly important for the semantic interpretation of the text as well as understanding the whole structure of the situation. In the prepositional system of Russian there are many items oriented to the spatial or plane localization, which may have several levels of positional accuracy, sometimes overlapping or embracing each other. Combination of original prepositions with nominal endings provides a continuum of partly similar types for the positioning of the event. We collect a number of locative uses for original prepositions as well as derivative ones and arrange them according to the frequencies of specified meanings in the collection of modern Russian texts. Different semantic aspects of locative constructions organize the complex semantic domain “Locative”. We present its structure divided into several intersecting sub-domains: (1) positioning of a single object in a spatial world and its surfaces; (2) positioning of two or more objects in relation to each other; (3) trajectory specification for a moving object by means of relations to objects localized.
