TRAFFICKING FOR SEXUAL EXPLOITATION IN ROMANIA

Abstract

In recent years, trafficking in human beings has been steadily increasing in Romania, and our country has become a origin country, but also home and destination for large traffic networks. Changes in political, social and cultural fields have led to an increase in poverty and unemployment, as well as an unequal distribution of the male and female in the labour market. According to the studies published by the National Agency Against Trafficking in Persons (ANITP), in 2016 the number of victims was 756, 14% lower than in the previous year. The year 2017 saw a 12% drop in the victims' population, to 662 victims. The share of men is almost three times lower (22.5%) than that of women (77.5%). This is explained by the fact that women are preferred for prostitution. They also fall victim to trafficking because they find it harder to work in the country. Trafficking for sexual exploitation accounts for about 77% of the total, the highest proportion in recent years. The study aims to identify the socio-demographic characteristics of women trafficked for sexual exploitation, and the methods used to recruit victims. In order to achieve the objectives, were used case study methods and study of social documents (case files, psychosocial evaluation reports), realized within the Association for the Development of Alternative Practices of Reintegration and Education (ADPARE). They were used five case studies of women who have experienced trafficking for sexual exploitation and are included in a social reintegration program.
