GEORGIA THE NEXT “HOT” SPOT? UNFREEZING ARMED CONFLICT IN ABKHAZIA
Abstract
In the wake evolving crisis in the Crimea, the other side of the Black Sea descended into political turmoil. Demonstrations calling for resignation of de facto President took the streets of de facto state of Abkhazia, a region of “frozen” conflict since 1992. The subject of analysis of this article is to uncover factors that formulated the attitudes of conflict parties toward each other, conceptualization of this armed conflict by Georgian administration and Abkhazian political elites, as well as changes in the paradigm transformation and shifts in policy formulation. Political, social, economic, and security dynamics may erode what stability is left in this region and enhance the potential for conflict escalation, as was the case in 2008.
