Abstract

The decision on the capital structure is one of the important decisions the owners of the corporation have to make. This decision affects the risk and the return on the capital invested by the owner. The aim of this paper is to analyze how the agricultural sector in Europe uses the debt capital in its funding. The factors used for the analysis of the agricultural companies debt capital level are the size of the agricultural unit, the country of its operation, the time period, the return on assets before interests and taxes. The comparison is carried out through descriptive statistics and statistical hypothesis tests. The result of the analysis shows that the level of indebtedness grows with the size of the agricultural unit. The level of the debt capital in agriculture companies cultivating wheat gradually decreased in the monitored period 2004 to 2013. There was no clear link between the level of debt and the return on assets in the monitored set of economic units. The source of the analyzed data was the Eurostat FADN database.
