ASSESSMENT OF THE ATTRACTIVENESS OF URBAN OPEN SPACES USING FUZZY INFERENCE

Abstract

The paper focuses on the possibilities of assessing the attractiveness of open recreational areas in the city using mathematical tools based on fuzzy logic. Urban studies aimed at evaluation of the chosen urban structure or its fragment always require taking into account many criteria. They are factors which often are difficult to be measured. Then the expert's knowledge and experience play a key role. The paper presents the concept of inference based on fuzzy logic. It has been used to assess the attractiveness of recreational open spaces. The factors influencing the attractiveness of recreational green areas are e.g. availability of the studied area, the equipment of the area with elements serving different interest groups of users as well as various age groups. Green open spaces are also considered depending on the location in the city and their rank, especially the extent of their impact in the city's structure. It happens that the use of green areas in the city is smaller than their potential. At the same time, new investments are planned and their location and concept of the general structure are being considered. Making a decision related to the revitalization of an already existing area or constructing a new one involves a choice among several alternative solutions. Fast computer analysis can greatly facilitate the decision-making process and at the same time may pay attention to factors that were not previously noticed. The target recipient of such a system may be people making decisions on behalf of the city authorities or the system can be an auxiliary tool for experts.
