SOURCES OF FORMING A COMMON SOCIAL IDENTITY: MIGRANTS AND HOST COMMUNITIES
Abstract
This article analyses the sources for forming a common social identity between migrants of different ethnicities from Central Asia and a host community, the citizens of Ekaterinburg. Ekaterinburg is a big city hosting a large number of migrants belonging to different ethnicities. The ethnocultural characteristics possessed by the migrants and the citizens of Ekaterinburg are different; this makes it problematic to form a common social identity. The authors consider the formation of a social identity as a process that changes attitudes and makes both migrants and the host community develop new behavioral norms. The authors of the article rely on the approach of Samuel Huntington, who distinguished between natural, territorial, economic, political, social and cultural factors in the formation of social identities. In the article, we present the results of a survey of migrants from Central Asia (N 231) and Ekaterinburg citizens (N 485). The authors conclude that territorial and economic factors contribute to the formation of a common social identity to a greater extent, while natural and cultural factors have a controversial impact on this process.
