REPRESENTING PICTORIAL ELEMENTS IN LITERARY WRITINGS: UNEXPLORED INTERSECTIONS IN MODERN ITALIAN CULTURE
Abstract
This paper focuses on representation of iconographic elements in literary writings in the context of Italian modernity, by addressing important and innovative theoretical and critical aspects from a multidisciplinary perspective, such as redefinitions of poetic boundaries and principles on which they reside. It examines how pictorial imagery and understandings can permeate oneВ’s own literary expression constituting its integral and substantial part, while the novelty of the paper consists in the fact that it studies exclusively unexplored examples. In underlying the elements of consonance between literary topoi and visual motifs the derived typological characteristics and notional categories are being defined. The conceptual framework for the present paper involves establishing new knowledge on diversified works from the standpoint of literary genres and compositional premises. It includes the analysis of specifically literary features, in structural and stylistic sense, belonging to diaristic, essayistic and critical texts, as well as to fictional prose, written by authors who are themselves visual artists (Fausto Melotti, Piero Manzoni, Renato Guttuso). This perspective is also related to the possibility of intermedial comparisons undertaken between literary and pictorial production within particular corpus. Furthermore, the paper aims to explore the aesthetic and ideational traits of writers' works centred on visual arts (Angelo Maria Ripellino, Carlo Betocchi, Andrea Camilleri). Likewise, the attention is devoted to adoption of literary schemes in the artistic medium such as artistsВ’ books (Emilio Tadini) and illustrations in works of literature (Mimmo Paladino). By applying the above-described modalities groundbreaking insights are developed and detailed description thereof is provided
