MOBILITY OF SOCIALLY EXCLUDED PERSONS
Abstract
The article deals with the topic of the mobility of socially excluded Roma women. It is aimed at analyzing how mobility can work as a reaction strategy of solving social exclusion and the related poverty. The topic is based on the theories describing space mobility as motivation for improvement of life conditions, particularly in case of poverty. The study was implemented by the qualitative research strategy, the method of questioning and the technique of biographic-narrative interview. The research set consisted of three Roma women living in a socially excluded locality in the South Bohemian Region, with a rich migration experience. The data were processed in form of case studies. The results suggested that migration is subjectively perceived as a source of change of difficult life conditions. However, in view of the imperviousness of excluded locality, the motivation to leave them is not sufficient; it is necessary to mobilize own sources in form of social family networks, economic capital and institutional assistance. Frequent short-distance migration occurs, in connection with improved quality of housing or the effort to get independent within the family. Economic improvement is linked to long-distance migration abroad. But such migration is connected with the need to own also other forms of capital that remain invisible in case of short-distance migration.
