EXPRESSIVENESS OF MUSICAL LANGUAGE ELEMENTS IN ERWARTUNG BY ARNOLD SCHONBERG
Abstract
The Expressionism, a modern artistic and literary movement emerged at the beginning of the 20th century in Germany, is characterized by a strong tendency to express inner feelings sometimes irrational, through tension, drama, subjectivity. In this paper, we approach the issue of the lyric expressionist theater, here represented by Erwartung monodrama of the Austrian composer Arnold Schoenberg, presenting it both from the point of view of the diversity of means of accomplishment, as well as of the stylistic and expressive variety. The works belonging to this innovative movement imply various interpretations. They capture the general atmosphere, tense, from an aesthetic and philosophical perspective, accentuating the expressiveness of musical language elements by emphasizing text-sound correspondences. For this reason, in Erwartung monodrama, the expressionist features are obvious, being highlighted by expressing the most intense emotions, by focusing on the experiences of a character, by lacking any structural conventions or through the violent contrasts and fast-moving text. The semantic value of the musical expression opens to performers new ways and means of creative interpretation, this being presented through the intensity of expression and the tendency to give shape to the deepest human feelings and anxieties.
