Abstract

Associative thinking is a key aspect for designers in the phases of their creative work. This type of thinking is based among others on analogical and metaphorical reasoning and reasoning by visual posters. Visual analogy and visual thinking play an important role in the field of design. They are often assisted and guided by visual stimuli. Our main goal was to conduct a global quantitative meta- analysis regarding the relation between analogical reasoning and creativity. The scientific literature was explored and from a total of 184 potential relevant studies, 6 were included in the analysis. These studies operationalize analogical thinking via visual analogies. We have calculated Cohen's effect size for each study which reported sufficient data for calculus (16 effect sizes). The results indicate that analogical thinking has a significant average effect on generating creative products (D= 0.40, VarD= 0.13, pextless .001, 95\% C.I.=[0.18;0.63]). The global effect of analogical thinking was calculated on a total sample size of 410 participants. Our main result pointed out the role of analogical thinking in creating original products. This suggests the need for further analysis in order to improve creative thinking.
