PERCEPTION OF SLOVAK PERSONALITY CHARACTERISTICS
Abstract
Several attempts seeking to explore national stereotypes have been made in the field of scientific research. Many of them dedicate themselves to a question of their relevance –whether they are or are not true, or what is their truthfulness rate. National stereotypes are often perceived as simplified expression of existing ethnocentric and xenophobic prejudices; therefore they are being refused. Even though the national character stereotypes are somewhat distorted reality, a part of the true may be found in them. In shaping national, ethnic or other group myths, in particular two groups of auto-stereotype stereotypes (images and stereotypes about themselves) and hetero-stereotypes (pictures of the others, foreign) play an important role. This contribution aims to compare auto-stereotype notions of a typical member of the Slovak nation within the frame of selected research studies.
