GENESIS OF DIVERSITY MANAGEMENT IN POLISH ORGANIZATIONS

Abstract

Nowadays, mainly due to socio-demographical processes, but also the need to stay competitive in the globalizing economy, diversity management is gaining more and more attention from enterprises. However, as research shows, it is still being implemented by only a few Polish organizations. The aim of the following paper was to examine the genesis of diversity management initiatives in Polish organizations, the main sources if this initiative, the motivation for implementing diversity management as well as the sources of the know – how. The paper presents results from 20 TDI’s (Telephone Depth Interview) conducted with representatives of companies, signatory of the Polish Diversity Charter. The results show, that the implementation of diversity management is manly being a result from a transfer of solutions developed at the corporate level or it is a derivative of the already implemented corporate social responsibility strategy. In some cases diversity management was being implemented due to the actions and lobbying of single employees. The main motives were the willingness to stay competitive, internationalization of the company or simply external imposition of guidelines and policies. In single cases it was being implemented, because the organization perceived itself as a leader in innovative solutions.
