TRAVELLING PREFERENCES FOR UNIVERSITY STUDENTS – A STUDY ON TRAVELLING CHOICES FOR STUDENTS AT THE LLEIDA UNIVERSITY, SPAIN
Abstract
Nowadays, tourism is one of the most debated topics because of the potential to generate revenue and help local communities to develop. With cheaper transportation costs - both in terms of fuel (especially for air transport) and people's ability to acquire their own car, traveling became more accessible for all categories of population, including young students. This article wishes to outline the profile of students from Spain who travel, by pointing out elements such as: the desire to travel, their experience and behavior as tourists, the main cities they visited during their studies and means of transportation they use for travelling. Outlining this profile is useful to many entities in this field, such as: travel agencies, transport companies, accommodation units and other related units, by helping them to adapt their offers to the actual needs of this segment of tourists. A total of 207 students from the University of Lleida in Spain were included in this study, with the average age of 21.5 years. The data were collected between January and March 2015 and were processed in SPSS. The results obtained from data processing showed that 99.5\% of students included in the study like to travel, asking for details and free materials from the tourist information points in 43\% of cases, and out of these, 75.9\% intend to travel to a foreign country in the near future. Their favorite means of transportation for travelling are by car (77.2\%) and by train (72.8\%), but 32.7\% also prefer hitchhiking.
