STATE OF PRESERVATION AND SPATIAL STRUCTURE OF CAPE VERDE CEMETERIES
Abstract
Cemeteries in the Cape Verde archipelago play an important role in the cultural landscape. They are one of the few elements of sacrum in the public space and provide precious cultural accents, places of contemplation and calm. They have many common features and they are extremely homogeneous. The main aim of the study was to analyze the state of preservation and spatial structure of selected cemeteries in Republic of Cabo Verde. Field studies were carried out in April 2015 on six islands: Sao Tiago, Sal, Santo Antao, Sao Vicente, Fogo and Brava. For cemeteries, simplified landscape and comparative analyses were carried out, involving a description of the shape of the plot, orientation, area, detailed location and surroundings. Particular attention was given to arrangement of green areas and clarity of the composition. Results of the entire analysis were presented in the form of a comparative summary table and graphical schemas of the areas under analysis. In the research, particular emphasis was given to identification of recurring and typical elements, and indicating differences between several facilities.
