Abstract

The most important capital of modern enterprises is information, knowledge and intellectual capital, while at the same time in process of building the competitive advantage, the role of material components decreases. Knowledge in the enterprise is partly its property but mostly its owners are employees. Therefore, it is crucial to provide employees with appropriate working conditions in which they could fully use their potential. This may require, among others, such activities as: changing the organizational culture, introducing new communication corridors or new rules for storing information. At the same time, in this context, it should be mentioned that knowledge in an enterprise may have an explicit or hidden character. Explicit knowledge is a kind of systematized and clearly defined knowledge (documents, databases) of easy transfer and facilitating the fulfillment of many company functions. Tacit knowledge accumulates with increasing experience and intuition, is individual and is passed on during professional relationships. It is estimated that about 80% of the knowledge accumulated in the enterprise is associated with tacit knowledge - it is therefore the main, though difficult to explore, source of new ideas or innovations. The problem of knowledge management is complex and multilayered. Problems in this area may refer to such issues as: mismatch of the enterprise structure, inappropriate level of personnel motivation, application of ineffective methods and management styles. However, actions in this area should be a priority for modern enterprises. Knowledge management allows to increase the value of intellectual capital, adjusting the strategy to real opportunities (strengths and weaknesses), encouraging innovation, better use of information and technical resources, modifying activities so that the company uses knowledge more effectively, minimizes knowledge gaps, develops knowledge that adds value to products and services. The study describes the most important issues related to knowledge management in enterprises, presents the basic problems and opportunities related to activities in this area, as well as the assumptions of the method of analysis and assessment of the company's knowledge resources.
