NEW WORDS? A COMPARATIVE STUDY OF TURKISH AND HUNGARIAN IN THE TIMES OF COVID-19

Abstract

The most recent global health crisis caused by Coronavirus spread reshaped our daily lives very quickly. Our languages were no exception in terms of change. New words and expressions started to appear in many languages along with the increased use of less usual words and expressions. This phenomenon provides an opportunity to research the limitations and the possibilities of our languages, in the line of previous studies. The objective of this study is to measure the impact of COVID-19 situation on both the Hungarian and Turkish languages; precisely vocabularies. Both languages belong to the Ural-Altaic language family which makes them a unique object of study to be compared. Also, considering that the given languages had gone through comprehensive language reforms, researching their reactions to the mentioned global crises, when new words and expressions were imposed on both languages, reaches some very interesting results. The comparative method is used through qualitative analysis and also statistical enquiry. The research is conducted in three parts. In the first part, a brief summary on the background of the two languages is provided in the sake of contextualisation, in the second part a glossary of the most commonly used words and expressions related to COVID-19 is created and categorised based on their types. Finally, in the third part quantitative and qualitative analysis of the glossary created in the second part is performed. One of the innovative results of this paper was the demonstration of a better capacity of the Hungarian language to react to the new vocabulary introduced by COVID-19 while comparing it with a more fragile reactive capacity of the Turkish language.
