SEVERAL INTERVENTIONS TO SOLVE THE PROBLEM OF WORKERS: THE STATE CONTRIBUTION AND THE SOCIAL WORK OF THE CHURCH
Abstract
Settlement of socio-economic problems generated by industrialization and globalization requires collaboration and effective cooperation between institutions as well as between socio-professional categories involved in economic activities. The Church's mission is not political, economic or social one, but an essentially religious mission, which is to proclaim the Gospel, to the fulfilment of redemption accomplished by Christ. The duty of the Church is to appeal to those responsible of civil life, so they work in order to build a social model characterized, in terms of socio-cultural by the presence of moral and humanistic vision, in terms of socio-economic by the definition of the respect for the rights and duties of social categories involved in work, and in terms of political by the exercise of one authority which must recognize, without going beyond its temporary scope, the religious foundation of social life. Confronted with new challenges and social, economic and cultural threats, the Church engage responsibly, with discernment and solidarity, to improve the living conditions of disadvantaged social classes. The state action cannot be limited only to favour a part of its citizens, neglecting the other one who, obviously, often brings together the majority of society's members, but it has the duty to ensure for its citizens a decent living, as well as the right to guarantee and also to control the use of private property for the common good.
