Abstract

During the second semester of 2013-2014, as an associate professor at the Arts Faculty from the Ovidius University in Constantza, I proposed a research project to the masters' degree students in Visual Arts, focussing on the relationship between earth and water in different versions: Waterfall, River, Coast of the Sea, Coast of the Lake, and the Danube Delta. From the beginning, I told the students that this research project had to be completed by an exhibition at one of the art galleries in Constantza—including a catalogue, a poster and a DVD which recorded and presented all the stages of the research and most of the paintings. I was glad to discover that this project was welcomed by the MA students and that they considered it a worthwhile challenge. First, the students had to consult and read a bibliography focussed on the history of Western landscape painting and Far-East cultural spaces, especially China and Japan. Then they had to take excursions to photograph the various landscape configurations in Dobrodgea (Dobrogea) region and the mountains of Romania; to observe and make notes, sketches and compositional structures. In the second part of the research, I asked the MA students to bring their portfolios with all their photos, sketches, and compositional structures because we had to select the best of their sketches and compositions for their future paintings—those which would be included in the final exhibition. At the same time I asked students to document the results of their research in a theoretical paper. At the end of the research, together with my students, we chose a gallery for the exhibition, edited and printed a catalogue, designed a poster and the invitations, prepared the exhibition, and promoted it to the general public. Finally we prepared the culminating event: the formal opening of the exhibition. All these stages of the research project are presented in detail in my paper for this conference. Meanwhile, the paper contains many reproductions of paintings made by the MA students who participated in this research project—a famous Chinese proverb says: a picture is worth a thousand words. In addition, at the end of my paper, before the conclusion, I include, as feedback, some evaluations written by the masters' degree graduating students who participated in this project.
