LIFE OF THE CITY IN SPACE

Abstract

A fundamental element in the debate about public space is understanding and determining its meaning. Tadeusz Buksi?ski in his article O miejskiej sferze publicznej focuses on its prevailing social function and differentiates eight types of public realm: for presenting oneself, expression, worship and holy places, view/landscape/cityscape, authority, commercial, utility, leisure and entertainment.[7] In 1748 Giambattista Nolli had created a map of Rome, which most important feature is distinguishing public spaces in the city. Grey color is used to depict private space which is penetrated by exterior and interior public spaces. It could be assumed that today cartographer would also include interior public space in civic buildings. Development of contemporary cities is the reason why public life takes place not only on the ground level like in NollyВ’s Rome. Escalation of public space network, as well as its function and attributes, urge architects and urbanists to research new possibilities of enriching and making it more attractive. More often it finds its references in third and fourth dimension, reaching out toward the virtual world. Furthermore, ubiquitous transparency is the reason for ambiguousness of the border between the interior and exterior. Christian Norberg Schulz defines the role of the architect as a facilitator in finding existential support by crystallization of images and dreams of the individual. The architectural space enables range of possibilities for identification. Similarly to a great work of art, it plays the role of a benchmark, allowing multitude of interpretations without losing its identity.[6]
