MODELLING REPETITION, REMEMBERING, AND TIME-TRAVEL IN MIKLOS ERDELYВ’S OEUVRE. A HUNGARIAN NEO-AVANTGARDE EXPERIMENT WITH LEAVING SPACE AND TIME
Abstract
The aim of my essay is to introduce a key feature of Miklos ErdelyВ’s oeuvre originating in conceptual art: the modelling of repetition, remembering, and time-travel. While the most salient oeuvre of Hungarian neo-avantgarde is categorized by art historians according to the media technologies applied in the artworks, ErdelyВ’s allround life-work can be best understood through this continuously modified intellectual horizon. Following these range of ideas will lead us to the recognition of the extraordinary character of Miklos ErdelyВ’s oeuvre within the context of the socialist Eastern BlocВ’s neo-avantgarde, conceptual art, as his art is able to leave the highly determined cultural space and time of the Eastern European region. Erdely started his contemplations on the problematics of repetition, original and copy, sameness and difference, periodicity and continuity at the beginning of the 1970s. This line of thought was continuously expanded until the end of his career, augmenting it with the issue of remembering and time-travel, which appeared in his texts as well as in his various artistic media. My paper will demonstrate the formation of ErdelyВ’s theory with particular focus on those works that can be connected to the modelling of repetition, remembering, and time-travel, which include texts, films, photos, graphics, paintings and actions, with special focus on those works that appeared in exhibitions not only in Hungary but also in Poland.
