IMPACT OF WATER RESOURCES PRODUCTIVITY ON GROSS VALUE ADDED IN BULGARIA
Abstract
In recent decades, the importance of water resources for the Bulgarian economy has become increasingly significant. In this regard, the purpose of this paper is to construct a complex index of water resources productivity, which will allow the regions in Bulgaria to be ranked according to the amount of water used by economic activities and the level of economic growth. This objective has been achieved by performing factor analysis based on four indicators –water used in the agriculture, forestry and fisheries sector, incl. irrigation, the industry sector, the service sector and the gross value added at factor cost (GVA) as a measure of economic growth. The data for the abovementioned indicators has been obtained from the National Statistical Institute for 23 regions in Bulgaria for 2018. On the basis of the obtained correlation coefficients, it has been determined that there is a very strong relationship between GVA and the amount of water used for economic activities. At the same time, a complex index has been obtained for each of the 23 regions by means of a linear aggregation of the weighted factor results obtained from the performed factor analysis. Based on it, it is possible to make specific recommendations for the rational use of water resources in order to achieve higher economic growth.
