CHARACTERISTICS OF PERSONS SUCCESSFUL IN LIE DETECTION THROUGH NON-VERBAL BEHAVIOR OBSERVATION

Abstract

Lie detection through nonverbal behavior is not a standard m ethod, but it is intuitive process, applied by lay persons and professionals. In our research we are interested in the ability of different professional groups to detect lie this way. As a part of this research we also follow certain characteristics that m ight differentiate between more and less successful persons. We focus on different cues they follow in their decision making process and certain stereotypes they might use during their decision. In another part we will also measure further personality char acteristics of the successful respondents, e.g. emotional intelligence and well well-being. We prese presented 21 videos 30 seconds long to the respondents and asked them to evaluate truthfulness or lie on the video. At the end the respondents were asked about the c ues, they preferred to follow in their decisions. The data for the analysis of the stereotypes were gained from 197 police officers and data for the analysis of cues, used in the detection from 45 students of different humanity fields. The results indicate , for example, that perceived different nationality might be influential stereotype compared to gender, age and perceived intelligence. Quite important part of the group (N=45 45) (60,5%) focuses on specific cues in behavior of the liar, rather than general i mpression or combination of both.
