GROWTH IN ORAL READING FLUENCY THROUGH ESP BLENDED COURSE: CASE STUDY OF SAMARA STATE UNIVERSITY OF ECONOMICS
Abstract
In this paper we present the results of an ongoing educational project which was started in the year 2016 in Samara State University of Economics, Russia. The purpose of this study was to monitor and assess the changes in the studentsВ’ Oral Reading Fluency (ORF) level attained through two different approaches: blended Learning approach and Traditional Classroom method. In Russia English for Specific Purposes (ESP) clearly dominates in tertiary educational institutions. Thus, the research was based on ESP course. The methodological approach taken in this study is a mixed methodology based on pedagogical experiment, mathematical statistics and assessment instruments. Two groups of students were trained ORF by two different methods. The two groups were twice assessed in the same way, firstly, after a sixteen-week period of instruction and, finally, at the end of the year. The results confirm the benefits of blended ESP Course from a language competence perspective. This suggests that the use of blended learning approach can be recommended for ESP courses in tertiary education.
