THE IMAGE OF THE EU IN TIMES OF CRISIS
Abstract
Nowadays when the European Union faces some daunting challenges, with Brexit and the COVID-19 pandemic merely being some of them, the research of the means and ways of its image structuring in British media is of a particular interest taking into consideration some historical reasons as well. The online versions of the published materials of the British periodicals (2017-2020) as well as some news sites, dedicated to the assessment of modern state of the EU, its future and its relationship with the United Kingdom and other countries, the role it plays in modern political and economic landscape are used as a material for the research. The article purports to detect and describe the means and mechanisms contributing to the representation and formation of the image of Europe in modern British media in the times of crisis within a fledgling field, namely axiology of journalism. To achieve this goal cognitive analysis of conceptual metaphors, taking part in the formation of the image of Europe is carried out. Political writersВ’ communicative strategies are detected and analyzed with the help of discourse analysis, allowing to conclude about the functions they serve in the image formation strategy. The content analysis demonstrates, that incorporating the potential of associative thinking into communicative strategies, the writers are trying to achieve a certain hierarchy of meanings and values concerning the role of the EU in modern society. The given research, which offers an interdisciplinary approach to discourse analysis incorporates the achievements of cognitive and applied cultural linguistics, pragmalinguistics, and theory of communication. It is of interest to a wide range of Russian and foreign scholars in the field of cognitive and political linguistics, political science and regional studies. The results of the research can be used to form new approaches to develop instruments of transdisciplinary integration of social studies and humanities, will contribute to better understanding of the role of media in the development of values.
