EPHEMERALITY AS NEW PRACTICE

Abstract

Ephemeral or temporary architecture is neither new nor marginal phenomenon in architectural history. In contrast to permanent structures, this tendency, which was being resented during modernist era, is focusing on structures that are defining time as its essential determining state, fundamental basis and key aspect of architecture – often considering it even more important than spatial and tangible aspect of such designs. In spite the fact that temporary architecture is being built only for a brief time scope it is still aspiring for changing our thinking about architecture. Temporary designs and elements are experimenting between architecture, art and urban furniture, testing architectural boundaries and offering a range of activities. Ephemeral architecture is becoming phenomenon spreading throughout our rather static city tissue, city centres or abandoned sites. Article is briefly looking at the history of ephemeral architecture – in a way of describing basis and stimulus that are leading this tendency today – describing architectural aspiration for permanence, its theoretical background. Article is looking at change in perceiving role of time in contemporary architectural practice and issues that are emerging whilst designing such structures. It is trying to find answer if these new tendencies are changing architectural practice and role of an architect in such cases. Is it weakening architectural profession and thus architecture itself? Or is it just bringing new challenges, impulses in the scope of variability, versatility and uncertainty? Is this the future of architectural practice or are we just creating fleeting memorials?
