Abstract
The paper deals with the drivers and barriers for the international competitiveness improvements in the pharmaceutical industry in Russia and the United States. The methodological basis of the study is the combination of the competitive advantages theory by M. Porter with the World Economic ForumВ’s Global Competitiveness Index methodology. A grouping of global competitiveness indicators in connection with the determinants of the Porter diamond was carried out and resulted in following seven pillars: factor conditions; conditions of demand; social infrastructure; political institutions; macroeconomic policy; cluster development; strategy, structure and competition of firms. Analysis of the exports and import quota and coverage ratios of imports by the export in the pharmaceutical sectors of both countries revealed controversial trends in the dynamics of pharmaceutical exports in Russia and the United States. The authors argue the impact of the related and supporting industries growth as a crucial driver for the Russian pharmaceutical exports potential growth.
