CHINA`S FOREIGN POLICY IN EAST ASIA

Abstract

The article deals with the actual problem of the evolution of Chinese foreign policy in East Asia in recent decades. Historically, the region is a sphere of special interests of China. After the end of the Cold War era, the balance of power in the Asia-Pacific region shifted in favor of the US-Japan bloc, but in modern conditions of economic weakening of Japan and losing of the military and political superiority on a global scale of the United States, and in the situation of strengthening Russia as an important player in the international arena and as China's ally in East Asia, the Chinese government is seeking to dramatically increase its influence on the processes taking place in the region. According to the authors, the economic growth of China, accompanied by a multiple increase of the military budget, the consistent strengthening of political cooperation with Russia, coupled with the tightening of the foreign policy of the Chinese government on territorial disputes with a number of neighboring states, can dramatically change the "status quo" in the region and even in the long term to lead to the hegemony of China in regional affairs. However, numerous territorial conflicts with neighboring countries, which are still unresolved and periodically exacerbated, sometimes even threatening a region-wide war, cast a shadow on China's image as a new world superpower that refuses "forceful methods" to resolve disputes in favor of a "soft power" policy.
