Abstract

The paper is a part of a broader research aimed at identifying and evaluating key knowledge and competences in the European and international business law of graduates in International Business in the Slovak Republic. In Slovakia, several studies have been carried out in the field of university graduates success on the labour market. The common finding of these studies was that graduates in economic disciplines acquire, during their study, a solid theoretical knowledge, however, lower than expected level of practical skills. This is the rationale for further improvements aimed at better understanding real needs of potential employers as well as for evaluation of acquired knowledge and competencies in specific fields of study by both the graduates and employers. This paper concentrates on the evaluation carried out by graduates. It is based on a questionnaire survey among graduates of the study programme International Business at the University of Economics in Bratislava. This is the only public university in Slovakia providing the possibility to graduate in this field of study. The paper results in the list of the most relevant specific fields of knowledge and competences in the European and international business law. Moreover, it affirms that it is necessary to improve the ability of graduates in International Business to apply theoretical knowledge in practice also in European and international business law. By incorporating the research findings into the curriculum and development of new ways of delivering practical teaching, the research improves interconnection between higher education and needs of the labour market. This will facilitate fully using graduates potential in favour of their employers as well as of the whole society.
