Abstract

The paper deals with one of the current problems of the Czech education – the development of literacy skills of primary and lower secondary basic school students. It draws attention to the persistent underperformance of Czech young students in international surveys of literacy, analyses representation of these issues in the existing curriculum documents and presents the results of a preliminary research focused on the role of public libraries in the development of children’s reading.
