Abstract

Topic: A study of current literature focusing on modern ways of remedying visual perception loss from the perspective of a special education teacher. In recent years, the number of new devices that use individual parts implanted in the eyes or brain of a human with a visual impairment and which restore visual perception has been rapidly increasing. These people then need comprehensive rehabilitation to know how to use these devices properly and follow the principles of working with them. With the change of clients some special education teacher’s tasks change too and are further discussed in the article. Method: This article is a review of journal posts from 2008-2013, selected to submit a brief overview of modern methods and devices designed to recover visual perception loss. The use of these devices is further connected with modern special education and special education teacher’s work. Results: The study of the literature revealed that in modern age there are many electronic devices, mostly implants, which restore visual perception of blind people. Although the images obtained using these devices are not nearly as good as the normal sight, there is a big assumption that they are going to be used in increasingly large quantities. A special education teacher should thus not only be able to work with people with these implants, but also should be an integral part of the treatment team. As an expert who understands life of people with visual impairment, they could help finding suitable candidates for medical trials by offering adequate information not only of a medical nature but mainly in terms of the specifics of the usage of the devices in everyday life and information about the development of possible complications.
