ELEMENTS OF HERMENEUTICAL ANALYSIS IN THE MUSICAL REPRESENTATIONS OF DAVIDВ’S PSALMS COMPOSED BY FRANZ LISZT
Abstract
In our paper we will talk about the diversity of religious expressions through the writings of psalms in Franz LisztВ’s creation, that appears to us as a micro-cosmos of the romantic period, with an expressiveness that underlines the finest differences between possible human feelings in relation to Divinity. Glory, gentleness, hope, despair, all of these are typically valid human feelings, which DavidВ’s Psalms synthesize with grace, and Liszt has managed to faithfully voice. Franz Liszt chose to listen to the words of Psalms 13, 18, 23, 116, 129, 137, and use this old texts in his creation. The reason these scores are less exploited in interpretation remains unknown, the mastery of these religious-musical achievements being undeniable. Focusing on religious images and ideas in music, the outcome is an amplified experience, a musical confession. In this paper, we propose hearing the music of Liszt as a relation to God, listening of sacred music as listening of theology, the hermeneutical analysis being the right means.
