GARDEN AND LANDSCAPE ARCHITECTURE OF THE INTERWAR MODERNISM IN SLOVAKIA
Abstract
Within the historical and regional context of the Czechoslovak Modern Movement, the paper examines the garden and landscape architectural concepts of the Interwar Modernism in Slovak territory. The research maps the local examples, expressed in various scales and typological forms, from gardens of family houses and villas, through design of outer spaces of school, sanatoria, administration and commercial buildings, up to urban concepts of garden cities and public open spaces at urban scale. The characteristic features of architectural concepts of Modernism - unique solutions of the relationship between the building and its environment are reflected in landscape and garden architectural qualities, which have to be preserved and maintained. The current problems and core restraints of preservation of the modernist gardens and landscapes in Slovakia are identified. They are mainly connected to the problems of ownership, rejection and changes of use – the socio-economical factors and insufficient preservation policies. In conclusion, recommendations are formulated, for legal framework of monument protection, building law and spatial planning regulations, to avoid degradation and to insure preservation of the landscape architectural values of the Modern Movement architecture heritage in Slovakia. They are discussed within the context of the worldwide trends of the Modern Movement cultural heritage preservation and conservation.
