ETHICAL AND PHILOSOPHICAL SOCIAL WORK PRINCIPLES - MIGRATION CRISIS
Abstract
Social work in the Slovak Republic is mainly focused on helping people who find themselves in various forms of need and need help. The paper analyzes the basic philosophical ethical bases of social work on the basis of which concrete assistance is realized. It outlines the basic principles of social work as a helping profession. It applies these principles to the attitudes of particular institutions to the arrival of migrants in Slovakia and describes specific cases in which the principles of social work in the approach to this vulnerable and disadvantaged group are absent. The situation that occurred in the territory of the Slovak Republic suggests the absence of a number of basic principles that form the pillar of the legal system as well as social work, which is the basis for the functioning of the welfare state to which Slovakia should be. As stated above, the basis of social work is human rights and social justice. The basic concept of the Constitution is respect for human rights, the right of a person to self-determination and dignity. However, these rights are flagrantly violated due to the refusal of migrants. The migrant person was not treated as a human person but as a really dangerous person who is not a potential but real risk. Likewise, the principle of social justice was violated because migrants were denied any form of assistance that would allow them to achieve at least a minimum level of a dignified life. The principles of social work also include the removal of obstacles that would prevent a person from satisfying his basic needs. It follows from the above description of the situation that the opposite process took place in Slovakia, which meant that migrants were challenged to exercise their basic human rights. In a situation where basic principles of social work are denied by the state power, it is not logically possible to apply the above-mentioned methods. In our opinion, it is the duty of politicians and the media to respect fundamental human rights and the principles of social work. All the more so if politicians adhere to the principles of social democracy.
