PROMOTING SCIENTIFIC EDUCATION THROUGH SOCIAL MEDIA FOR GENERATION Z: THE CASE OF CIVIC ENGAGEMENT
Abstract
The purposes of the article were to illustrate how scientific education can be promoted through social media for generation Z in relation with civic engagement and to exemplify the case of a Romanian association involved in this type of activity. The research methodology was based on a quantitative method and a study case. The paper showed that social media represents a useful tool to promote scientific education within specific categories of people. Also, it demonstrated that, as science is part of a complex political and socio-economic context and can analyze everything such as global warming or food safety, civic engagement might be improved. The paper contributes to the development of scientific research as it analyzes a valuable example of a good practice about the use of todayВ’s social media in linking scientific education with civic engagement. The Fascination Association is a Romanian organization that promotes scientific activities and projects for the youths, and proposes an interesting tool as part of an integrated education management solution, namely a YouTube channel. As many young people prefer to spend their time on social networks, such as Facebook or YouTube, the association designed the YouTube channel called "Profesorul Trasnit TV" in order to create attractive scientific contents dedicated to the youths. The results were beyond expectations as the YouTube page attracted more than 82,000 subscribers and over 6 million views during its three years of existence.
