THE FLOW OF MENTALITIES IN SOUTH-EASTERN EUROPE
Abstract
The societies in the South-East European area are dominated by relations that have acquired specific tones: Sacred and secular, orality and writing, rural and urban, tradition and modernity. The deciphering of the respective tones can be realized based on the analysis of the mentality flow, mentalities being neither just “prisons of long duration” in the sense of forces preventing progress over long periods of time (Fernand Braudel), nor just a “philosophical way” of approaching the perceptible reality (Roger Chartier), but the whole feeling and expression of man, as body and soul, related to constants, stability factors, permanences and especially to his relation with God. For this reason, the investigation of mentalities has to be multidisciplinary and, from this perspective, the analysis of the tragic experience of the Totalitarian mechanism, encountered in many South-East European countries, has shown, for instance, how the process replacing the charisma, namely the spiritual life, by public consensus and a calling limited only to reason has deviated into an ideology that has suffocated and paralyzed the intellectual life and, implicitly, the spiritual life
