THE CORRELATES BETWEEN INTERNET ADDICTIVE BEHAVIOR AND PSYCHOSOCIAL VARIABLES OF USING THE SOCIAL NETWORKS AMONG SLOVAK UNIVERSITY STUDENTS
Abstract
The aim of this paper was to describe the possible relationships between internet addictive behaviour, daily time of using the social networks and some variables about users (age, sense of real time, self-confidence in virtual environment and boredom susceptibility). The sample, comprising 306 slovak university students (102 males, 204 females), was divided into three age-groups (18-20 years, 21-23 years, 24 and more). The respondents were administered the questionnaire, consists of 20-item Internet Addiction Test (IAT) by Kimberly Young (1996), the Boredom Susceptibility Scale (BSS - a subscale of the Sensation Seeking Scale) by Zuckerman (1979), socio-demographic questions about respondents and scales for measure sense of real time and the self-confidence in virtual environment. The findings indicate, that 20% respondents have problems with addictive behaviour by IAT questionnaire and are susceptible for boredom by BSS questionnaire. This variables were tested, with a significant small-strength relationship between score of internet addiction, boredom susceptibility, and age of the respondents, significant medium-strength relationship between score of internet addiction, daily time of social networks using, sense of real time and the self-confidence in virtual environment.
