DEVELOPMENT OF LARGE AGRICULTURL FARMS IN CEE COUNTRIES
Abstract
The purpose of the study is to analyze the common and the different features in development of the large agricultural farms and the place of these farms in the agriculture of the Central and Eastern European (CEE) countries. The economic analysis methods and techniques, especially the time series and a comparative method was used in the study. The Lorenz Curve was created for the evaluation of the income differences in the groups of various agricultural farms. The Eurostat and FADN data for 10 CEE was used, covering the time period since 2007. Four criteria were applied for the evaluation of importance of the large agricultural farms - a number of agricultural farms, UAA area, number of employees and standard output. The closest case studies were carried out for the three selected countries – examples: the Czech Republic, Poland and Estonia. The performed analysis shows that the role of the large agricultural farms in various CEE is different, and it also differs based on various criteria. Overall, taking into account the four criteria applied, these agricultural farms have the greatest importance in the Czech Republic, Slovakia and Estonia, but the least - in Romania, Slovenia and Poland. The performed analysis allows making an indicative conclusion that it is impossible to distinguish one most successful or less successful structure of the agricultural farms. A different structure of the agricultural farms may be found in different countries, which is established by the historical conditions, government policy and the economic situation. The country may have a significant and well-developed agricultural production with both large and small proportion of the large agricultural farms, as well as the proportion of the sector in employment may differ. The situation when a portion of the large agricultural farms rapidly grows in the agriculture, however, creates a negative pressure on the rural area, because it pushes people out of the rural areas and thus density of population.
