GREEN DESIGN IN CHILDREN DEVELOPMENT
Abstract
Environmental and architectural characteristics that are affecting children`s physical abilities and health were identified in several recent studies. This paper aims to draw attention towards the importance of the interaction with nature during childhood. When talking about green architecture, we consider criteria such as: environmental impact, water conservation, energy efficiency, green design and healthy buildings. In order to identify children`s relationship with nature nowadays, we created a survey that showed the lack of natural elements in children educational facilities. The survey was created using a selection of the Biophilic Design Matrix principles, based on Stephen Kellert`s design attributes, adapted to our situations. The analysed studies and the survey results indicated the need for a shift in the children`s environment design process in order to reconnect them with nature, not only in future projects but also in existing buildings. The results pointed towards the need for a more detailed study on educational institutions, in order to obtain a better understanding over the actual situation and the potential factors that could influence children`s perception. Subsequently, through a future research paper, the adequate methods will be proposed, by which these spaces can become appropriate environments that establish the important bond between children and the natural world.
