THE EXTREMIST CONDUCT PROBLEM ISSUE IN THE AMERICAN POLITICAL CULTURE

Abstract

The article deals with the views of representatives of the American political science, such as S. Lipset, E. Raab, N. Smelser and others on the problem of extremism. The aim of the study is to determine the factors that contribute to the development of extremist movements and the factors that prevent extremism in a democracy. American scientists demonstrate that this phenomenon is pre-conditioned by both objective and subjective factors, a certain state of the political system, the citizensВ’ education level, the influence of manipulative technologies. Extremism is associated with the specifics of political culture, which affects the stability of the system as a whole. The problem of political behavior determination is studied in political science at the empirical and theoretical levels. In the first case, preference is given to its dependence on economic status. In the second case, the study of factors begins with the individual and has a strongly marked psychological character. The practical significance of the analysis is an opportunity to identify the groups of population that can act as the social basis for extremist forces and develop measures to counteract such movements. The extremist ideology is adjacent to the anti-pluralist worldview because it does not recognize the existence of competing ideas. It always aims to suppress the freedom of an individual or a group, limiting their actions in the political sphere. The study is based on bibliographic materials and the method of systematization.
