SPECIFICS OF CEMETERY CULTURE IN BORDER-AREA: THE CASE OF LATVIA - BELARUS
Abstract
Cemetery culture is a phenomenon of everyday life culture that represents many anthropological concepts: memory, life, living, death, human body, soul, etc. Each culture develops its own model of the space of cemetery with the principles of designing the cemetery space, tombstone culture, burial, cemetery territory and its maintenance as well as commemoration traditions as its components. Investigation of cemeteries in the border area is a significant segment of studying the aspects of present and past, individual and collective, ethnic and confessional culture space. The border area manifests greater interaction of various traditions. It projects the synthesis and/or juxtaposition of urban and rural, ideological, confessional, civil and material as well as traditional and modern aspects. The object of this research is the investigation of cemetery culture in the border-area region - in the contact zone of two or several cultures. The research aim is to characterize the cemetery space in Latvian – Belarusian border area as a typical segment of the past and present, individual and collective, ethnic and confessional of this culture space. The empiric research base has been developed by applying the field research method, which has contributed to establishing both the indicators for the description of cemetery territory and the frequency and variations of these indicators. The systematization of features of religious, ethnic and social life culture involved the application of the anthropologic and semiotic method of the cemetery territory analysis. The analysis of social features was done by using the approach of sociological stratification.
