TRANSFERRING TECHNOLOGY FROM THE REMOTELY PILOTED AIRCRAFT SYSTEMS (RPAS) INDUSTRY TO THE CREATIVE INDUSTRY: WHY AND WHAT FOR?
Abstract
Although RPAS offer great advantages and creative possibilities, its use by the Creative Industries is still rare and focused on outdoor filming and photography. Until now, RPAS have been primarily designed for outdoor use by different end-users, in fields such as inspections, agriculture, real estate, security, etc. However, since existing RPAS lacks a precise, robust and affordable indoor positioning system as well as advanced safety features, the control of any RPAS in indoor environments is particularly difficult and unsafe, meaning that RPAS are not being professionally employed indoors. In addition to the positioning issue, Creative Industries do not employ RPAS inside buildings because they are not equipped with a reliable safety system. While an outdoor RPAS flies high and is only near people during take-off and landing, an indoor RPAS would constantly fly near people and objects. Hence, three main risk scenarios have to be considered: a) injury to the RPAS operator, b) injury to the public and c) general damage to property. There is thus a clear need to minimise the occurrence and impact of these risk scenarios, enabling the RPAS to be used in indoor environments. The main objective of the AiRT project is to provide Creative Industries SMEs with a remotely piloted aircraft system (RPAS) for indoor use, which will enable these industries to expand their creativity and offer new and improved services. Although the Creative Industries comprise a large number of sectors such as performing arts, music, publishing, design, fashion, TV and movies, the use of the AiRT would be focused on those Creative sectors that could employ an RPAS in indoor spaces for filming or photo shoots. Examples of these sectors are architecture and heritage, the performing arts, the photography industry, the movie industry, advertising agencies, the video game industry and television.
